For those that are following the 12 Days of Christmas on my socials, the 6th Day of Christmas is 6 Ayurvedic Wisdoms!
There are of course so many wisdoms that come from the Ayurvedic philosophy, so this was actually quite tricky to narrow it down! Below are a few of my faves as they are always the ones I come back to for myself and my clients.
First up what is Ayurvedic living?
Ayurveda is a Vedic science, and the sister science of Yoga. It is a traditional system of healthcare developed over 5,000 years and is as relevant today as it was then. The word itself is from the Sanskrit language, meaning the ‘Science of Life’.
Two Health goals of Ayurveda
When living Ayurvedically we are mostly always incorporating two key health goals, these are:
a. Curative – To reverse diseases (dis-ease) where possible; and
b. Preventative – promoting longevity through diet, daily lifestyle, yoga, breathing, meditation, and herbs.
It is all about living in harmony for your unique self, optimising your health, longevity and often uses lifestyle and dietary guidance for the body, mind, and soul.
The 5 elements
The foundations of Ayurveda are rooted in the principle that the entire universe is composed of 5 elements. Our body is composed of the same 5 elements. We are a microcosm of the macrocosm (Geeta Vara). The 5 elements are:
Ether/space – Akash
Air – Vayu
Fire – Agni
Water– Jala
Earth – Prithvi
These elements correspond to how we express physically, mentally and emotionally. Each can be charactised by qualities seen in everything – including food, activities, the wider environment, seasons and even our body and mind. When we are out of sync in our relationship with the elements, we may experience disturbances in the body, which can give rise to various health issues (dis-ease).
Doshas
The doshas are the most practical cornerstones of Ayurvedic philosophy, which stipulates that our personality and physical characteristics are a result of the doshas.
There are 3 doshas, and these are derived from varying combinations of the 5 elements, that are present and functional in the body.
Vata – governs movement and regulations and is a combination of the Air and Ether elements.
Pitta – governs heat and transformation and is a combination of the Fire and Water elements.
Kapha – governs structure and growth and is a combination of the Earth and Water elements.
They are the bio-energetic forces in our body that sustain life. Without any of them, life would not exist!
We are made up of all three doshas but in varying amounts – and are therefore beautifully unique! When in harmony of your doshic mix, you will experience good health, strength, vitality, and emotional wellbeing.
The best version of you!
Your characteristics physically, mentally, and emotionally will form what is called your Prakriti – your natural unique constitution!
Sattva
Sattva is a beautiful Sanskrit word meaning ‘consciousness’ and ‘truth’. It is at the heart of Ayurvedic philosophy. When we experience sattva or live a sattvic life we live well, rich in peace, harmony, gentleness, love and selflessness. When we are sattva, we FEEL the natural energy within us radiating across every aspect of our lives and outwards.
How gorgeous is that!
Dharma
Dharma is all about being or living in alignment with who we are, our intrinsic values. Some might even can it our purpose. Dharma is purely individual, but at the centre of its meaning, is all about following the heart over the mind. Heart over mind.
How many of us live from our hearts?
So those are my top 6. What are yours?
